1)
What the symbol is: The
Radley House
2)
What is happening in the book when the symbol appears: Dill first comes to town, and he’s
fascinated by the Radley house.
3)
What the symbol represents:
The Radley house represents Scout and Jem’s innocence. In the beginning of the book, Scout’s
biggest fear is the phantom living within the walls of this mysterious
house. As the book progresses and
Scout is introduced to racism and prejudice, The Radley house and all it’s
shadows becomes a an old forgotten friend. The innocence of Scout, Jem, and Dill trying to lure Boo out
of that house is lost when they are thrust into the adult world of black and
white.

1) What the symbol is (the concrete object): The syrup
2) What is happening in the book when the symbol appears: walter is having dinner with the finches.
3) What the symbol represents (abstract idea/feeling/etc.): I think the syrup represents the hate and racism in Maycomb County. Walter, because he is and was raised a Cunningham, doesn't like people of color so he is covering his food, or Maycomb county, with liquid hate, the syrup. I think the way Walter was raised is a big part of this. He was taught by his family and neighbors not to like people of color and so that what he does. Then, when Scout says, "what in Sam Hill are you doing?", it shows that Scout doenst understand ad the hate and racism in Maycomb.

1) What is the symbol? The symbol is the note on the fishing rod.
2) What is happening in the book when the symbol appears? Dill, Scout, and Jem are going to go to the side of the Radley house and sticking a note in the shutters.
3) What the symbol represents (abstract idea/feeling/etc.) I thought this represented innocence/ childhood. It really seems childish to me that they let their curiosity take over their common sense. They also didn't really think about the outcome and what the worst situation would be. This is also a childish action, to act before thinking about the situation to its fullest extent.

1) What the symbol is (the concrete object)? The snowman
2) What is happening in the book when the symbol appears? It snows for the first time since 1885, so school gets cancelled. Jem and Scout decide to make a snowman. The snow on the ground is slushy and dirty, so the snowman looks more black than white. Scout calls it an n-word snowman, and they agree that it's awkward body shape resembles Mr. Avery.
3) What the symbol represents (abstract idea/feeling/etc)? It represents Jem and Scout's impudence before they learn their lesson from Atticus.

1) What the symbol is (the concrete object): Aunt Alexandra
2) What is happening in the book when the symbol appears: Jem, Scout, and Atticus are visiting Aunt Alexandra for Christmas
3) What the symbol represents (abstract idea/feeling/etc.): Aunt Alexandra represents tradition. She wants Scout to act more like a "lady" and she is not used to how strong willed she is. Through out the entire book (until the very end) she is telling Scout to conform to societies views of how a lady should be. She also represent the towns view of tradition. They are so used to black and white people being separate that they can not accept a white man standing up for a black man.
1) What the symbol is (the concrete object) : Mockingbird
2) What is happening in the book when the symbol appears: Atticus and Miss Maudie are telling the children about how it's a sin to kill a mockingbird when the kids get their air rifles
3) What the symbol represents (abstract idea/feeling/etc.): The mockingbird represents the black people as well as Boo Radely. Black people help the white people immensely every single day and they do nothing but help. Boo Radley doesn't disturb anybody(that doesn't have it coming to them), and he saved Jem and Scout's life. Like a mockingbird, Boo left small trinkets for the children. Mockingbirds will often pick up small shiny things and put them in their nest.

1) What the symbol is (the concrete object)? Tim Johnson (the mad dog)
2) What is happening in the book when the symbol appears? The dog is on it's way down the street and the Finches, along with Cal and Heck, are wait ting for him to get closer.
3) What the symbol represents (abstract idea/feeling/etc.)? The racism in Maycomb. The dog represents the racism because people expect it in certain situations, like racism in the trial and mad dogs in August. Also there are a few quotes that make me think of how racism in Maycomb works, "…seemed dedicated to one course and motivated by an invisible force..." There's another about they just blindly follow the curve and a few more, but my king is that everyone expects it and goes along with it, and right no, Atticus is standing up against it.

1) What the symbol is (the concrete object) - Mrs. Dubose's morphine
2) What is happening in the book when the symbol appears - Mrs. Dubose has just died, and Atticus comes home and explains to Jem how Mrs. Dubose was addicted to morphine and that her fits were due to the fact that she was going through withdrawal, but she continued to refuse to take morphine anymore.
3) What the symbol represents (abstract idea/feeling/etc.) - Mrs. Dubose's morphine symbolizes courage and bravery because even though, just like Atticus in the trial, she was going against the odds and was 'whipped before she started', she still tried to quit and won her fight even if she had to go through extreme physical pain to do so, and again, like Atticus, she was willing to put her cause above herself because she couldn't have lived with herself if she hadn't quit before she died.

1) What the symbol is: the living room lights
2) What is happening in the book when the symbol appears? It is when Mr. Tate is in the front yard with Atticus and is telling him he thinks there is going to be trouble. Aunt Alexandra then tells them to turn the lights on, and Scout thinks Jem just didn't hear her. (Pg. 147)
3) What the symbol represents: It represents the defiance Scout and Jem show towards Aunt Alexandra, and how they are willing to go against anyone to keep Atticus safe. Also, it could also be a symbol for their stubbornness.

2) What is happening in the book when the symbol appears? They are about to go into the courthouse and Jem explains what mixed children are as they are explaining who Dolphus Raymond is to Dill.
3) What the symbol represents (abstract idea/feeling/etc.)? They represent how Maycomb treats people that are different or don't exactly look like something they've seen before.

1) What the symbol is: Mayella's flowers
2) What is happening at the time: Scout is describing the Ewell house to the reader during Mr. Ewell's testimony
3) What the symbol represents: I believe it represents the only light or chance of goodness in the Ewell household. Mayella was smart enough to set up the whole situation, sending her siblings away, finding a way to get Tom inside, but the only part she forgot was what happened if he didn't want to or got caught doing it. And so Mr. Ewell kills that light by beating Mayella and killing Tom Robinson.

1) What the symbol is (the concrete
object): Mr.Raymond's bag with Coca-Cola in it. (Pg.203)
2) What is happening in the book when the symbol appears: Mr.Raymond is offering his drink to Dill.
3) What the symbol represents (abstract idea/feeling/etc.): I think that the bag hiding the soda represents how people, such as Dolphus Raymond, feel like they have to hide themselves. Even though he does do what he wants and lives with black people, he still hides that he doesn't really like to drink. He just pretends for other people's benefit. Boo Radley hides, too. He does it because he doesn't want to people, but he still feels like he has to hide. Neither of them fit in, so they have to do something so they don't bother people as much. They also may hide to help themselves. Mr.Raymond saves himself from people calling him bad things by pretending he is drunk, while Boo hides so he doesn't have to deal with things that he knows exist but may not want to see.

1) What the symbol is (the concrete object) Atticus's pocket watch
2) What is happening in the book when the symbol appears. Well it appears through out the book as a whole but this time it was when Jem and Atticus were talking about the trial after it ended and Atticus looked at his pocket watch. (pg. 226)
3) What the symbol represents (abstract idea/feeling/etc.) It represents the passing on of family traditions. It is a tradition for the son to get something like the pocket watch handed down to him from his father. The tradition has been going on for many generations and I don't believe Atticus is going to stop that tradition now.

1) What the symbol is? The Mrunas and Mr. Everett
2) What is happening in the book when the symbol appears? Aunt Alexandra is having her tea party and on wolf her guests is telling everyone about the Mrunas and Mr. Everett
3) What the symbol represents? This represent Atticus and how hypocritical Maycomb can be. Mr. Everett represents Atticus because both of them are tying to help out the black people. The fact that everyone feels bad for the Mrunas but continue to be very mean to the black people in their community shows their hypocritical side.

1) What the symbol is (the concrete object):Scout's shoes.
2) What is happening in the book when the symbol appears: Scout leaves her shoes behind at the Halloween party, and when she realizes this, the lights are turned off as the last person leaves.
3) What the symbol represents (abstract idea/feeling/etc.): Scout's shoes represent safety and comfort. Before she forgets them, everything is going well, despite a creepiness that permeates the night, but afterwards, she can't navigate well because she keeps stubbing her toes and tripping over rocks.

Pgs. 266-285 (the end)
1) What the symbol is (the concrete object)? The radley front porch
2) What is happening in the book when the symbol appears? Scout has just walked boo radley home and is standing on his porch
3) What the symbol represents (abstract idea/feeling/etc.)? This symbol represent basically scouts life. As the book has gone on everyone has seen the radleys as bad people and who you should stay away from. Earlier in the book Atticus told the kids that you don't know a man until you spend a day in his shoes. Scout says that she was only standing in boos front porch and already felt she knew what it was like to be him. The porch is where she has her biggest realization about how boo isn't a bad person. The porch is special because she realizes boo can see everything that's going on in their community. Scout finally knows that boo radley isn't a bad person on the radley porch.
